Big Kids' Fish Pond

WIP Wednesday is brought to you by Miss Rose and Joman.
This is their Koi pond, which they designed, dug and built themselves. Their young friend (and helpful advisor/digger) across the street had built one at his house, with encouragement from another friend up the road who had built one and raises fish there.

That's peer pressure for ya. :-)

This picture was taken on the first day I ever saw the pond. I had no idea that when they said they were building a fish pond, that they meant a 7x4 foot, 36" deep, lined pond with all the trimmings, plus a planned (and now mostly dug) garden area surrounding it.

The pond is now home to three happy orange-and-white Koi, and the kids plan to purchase some butterfly Koi when the weather plans to stay warm.

Thanks kids, for sharing your WIP, and thanks, Deb, for the blog idea. :-)

AWESOME Job! Can they be hired out to dig us a pond? I can't wait to see the finished product and the fish.

WIP=Work In Progress? Great idea! the kids told me about the pond when we had a videochat, but I also did not think it would be as big and fully developed as this! Wow!

Will WIP Wednesday be an ongoing feature of your blog? Hope so! XO

Good Grief that was a lot of work!
Congratulations to these hard workers.

My husband would be quite pleased if our teens were to do such a wonderful thing. He hopes to have a small pond one day.

What do you do with the fish when the weather gets cold again? Just curious. Looks very awesome. :)

Wammy: I think they enjoyed all the digging, believe it or not, and are champing at the bit every day to get out and work on it. Maybe it's something Michael would enjoy doing at your home :-)

Mom: WIP is Work In Progress, and yes, I imagine it will be an ongoing feature of the blog considering as how I am the queen of WIP's. Friday's posts will be a little more difficult to come by.

Becky: yes, a tremendous amount of work. It amazes me to see how hard they can work when *they* want to, ha ha. Not that I'm sayin' anything.

Deb: I guess the idea is that the pond is deep enough (3ft) so that it won't totally freeze to the bottom and the fish will somehow survive. I guess we will see.

Deb, Water is the only liquid in the universe that becomes less dense (expands) as it freezes which allows it to float vs sink. The melting of the water actually creates a warming effect (and Oxygen) in the water underneath for the fish and the ice provides insulation for the water underneath. Water is absolutely fascinating and one more indicator of a designer. This is just what I remember from college, I am sure you can read plenty about it online. Moey is correct with the 3’ depth to keep it from freezing solid. The water still gets pretty cold though which means there is a limited number of fish for outside ponds and the fish need to be acclimated to the temperature first (by floating them in the pond plastic bags before putting them in)
